Actually, it's been a feature for a long time. I wrote about it on the tips page but someone got me to realize it should be on the wood pages, too. 

Yea, it's wasteful (2 blocks + fuel to get 1 coal) but quite useful in the early game. Like using leaves as fuel, which I gotta add to the leaves pages, for the same reason! 

I've been playing cruel lately and it's taught me a few more things... (it's TOUGH!)
