Thanks stanimus, that explains a lot. Have to say I consider that a bug, not a feature. It is ludicrous to have my presence instigate spawning of nuisance animals. I suppose one solution would be to use creative mode to fly to a distant location to sleep and then fly back in the morning. I have also noticed that once I am established in an area, the birds are super flighty. In a new game I can sneak up on birds and kill them but not in the late game which makes arrow manufacture a problem.
