The Recipaedia will tell you how to make a rake rake. How are you growing cotton without a rake? You have to grow cultivated cotton - it's going to grow to be white, not yellowish.

You harvest it by 'attacking' it. Punch it, break it and it will drop cotton wads. If it doesn't, then either you didn't wait until it was fully grown or you didn't plant it properly (cultivated).
